Assam Police Strikes Back: Two More NSCN (IM) Cadres Nabbed in Shocking NHAI Extortion Crackdown
Two individuals connected with the National Socialist Council of Nagalim (Isak-Muivah), commonly known as NSCN (IM), have been apprehended on charges related to extortion threats against a National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) road project in Assam’s Dima Hasao district. The arrests were made by the Assam Police, who identified the suspects as Lantanlung Bariamtak, aged 30, and Heliwang Newme, aged 28. Both men are believed to hold the rank of sergeant within the insurgent group.
On May 1, Assam’s Director General of Police Harmeet Singh confirmed the seizure of a 7.65mm pistol, a magazine, and live ammunition during the arrests. “It is learnt that both the arrested persons belong to NSCN (IM) and are holding the rank of Sergeant,” Singh stated, highlighting the ongoing struggle against insurgent activity in the region.
The arrest follows a violent confrontation between security forces and NSCN (IM) militants in the same district that resulted in the deaths of three insurgents. This operation, conducted by the Assam Police and Assam Rifles, saw the demise of Captain Gailuneing Pamei, Sergeant Major Haijeulungbe Daime, and Shanvah Ahkonyah, all affiliated with the NSCN (IM)’s ZLR-A Region.
Assam Police spokesperson Rajib Saikia reported that a significant cache of weapons and ammunition was confiscated from the encounter site. “During the operation, security forces recovered three AK series rifles, five AK series magazines, 115 rounds of AK ammunition, two handguns with magazines, ten rounds of ammunition, two walkie-talkie sets, incriminating documents, Rs 12,570 in cash, two mobile phones, and various other items indicative of armed conflict,” Saikia noted.
Authorities have registered a case under the Arms Act as investigators dig deeper into the extortion network alleged to be undermining infrastructure development in this strategically important but remote hill district. This network has raised concerns, highlighting the persistent issues of insurgency and infrastructure challenges in the region.
The situation remains fluid as law enforcement agencies continue their efforts to dismantle the extortion operations linked to the insurgent group, ensuring that vital development projects can proceed without hindrance. The actions taken reflect an ongoing commitment by Assam authorities to combat insurgent activities and protect the interests of the local population.
As investigations unfold, the Assam Police is urging community members to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities that could be linked to extortion threats or insurgency. The effects of such organizations on development projects within the state underscore the complexity of the security landscape in Assam, as local authorities strive to balance safety and progress.
