Black Sabbath’s Apocalypse: Ozzy’s Desperate Cry, a Final Reckoning, and the Agony of a Rock Legend’s Living Hell
The inimitable Ozzy Osbourne, the Prince of Darkness, the heavy metal icon who’s been to hell and back – literally. As I chatted with him via video call from his Los Angeles home, I couldn’t help but notice the wear and tear on his battle-hardened body. The man who’s been a staple of the rock world for over five decades is struggling to recall the details of his recent years, which he aptly describes as “the worst of my life.” And, darling, it’s been a wild ride.
Let’s set the scene: it’s 2019, and Ozzy’s in the midst of his farewell tour, which his wife and manager Sharon had deemed a necessary evil due to his diagnosis with Parkinson’s disease. But, because life loves to throw curveballs, Ozzy contracted pneumonia not once, but twice, and then had the pleasure of dealing with an infection that required a nifty little device to be implanted in his arm for IV antibiotic shots. Six years on, and he’s still feeling the effects – a true rockstar, indeed.
Now, add to that a nasty fall in the middle of the night, which resulted in a rather gruesome neck injury, and you’ve got a recipe for disaster. Or, in Ozzy’s case, a catalyst for a firestorm of surgeries, including the infamous operation that left him with metal plates and screws in his spine. I mean, who needs a Aston Martin when you can have a spine that’s more metal than a Motorhead concert?
As if that weren’t enough, our beloved Ozzy was also dealing with the demons of depression, feeling like he was stuck in a never-ending nightmare. But, because Sharon is the ultimate rockstar wife, she swooped in with a plan to get him back on track – a farewell show in his hometown of Birmingham, featuring the original Black Sabbath lineup, along with a veritable who’s who of rock royalty, including Metallica, Guns N’ Roses, and Tool. It’s going to be, in the words of Tom Morello, “the greatest day in the history of heavy metal.” But, between you and me, there are still some major question marks surrounding Ozzy’s health – will he be able to perform? Will the show go off without a hitch?
Despite the uncertainty, Ozzy’s determined to make it happen, even if it kills him (which, at this point, wouldn’t be entirely surprising). He’s in training, working with a vocal coach and a personal trainer to get his strength back up. And, in a shocking turn of events, he’s even ditched his rockstar lifestyle, opting for a quieter life at home with his family. It’s the end of an era, folks, and I’m not sure we’re ready for it.
As Sharon so aptly puts it, “It’s time to say ‘enough’.” After half a century of rocking our world, the Osbournes are ready to hang up their heavy metal boots and live out their days in peace. Well, as much peace as one can expect with a husband like Ozzy and a menagerie of rescue animals. It’s going to be a wild ride, darling, and I’m honored to be along for the ride. So, mark your calendars for July 5th, when the gods of rock will descend upon Villa Park in Birmingham for one final, unforgettable hurrah. It’s going to be a night to remember, and I wouldn’t miss it for the world.
