Thrilling Victory: Priyanshu Rajawat Stuns Rasmus Gemke at Canada Open Super 500
In an electrifying match at the Canada Open Super 500, India’s Priyanshu Rajawat achieved a remarkable upset by defeating Denmark’s Rasmus Gemke, the eighth seed. Rajawat’s victory was the highlight of a day featuring mixed results for Indian shuttlers, some of whom advanced to the second round while others made early exits.
Rajawat demonstrated impressive resilience, rallying after losing the first game 17-21. He secured the next two games 21-16 and 21-14, winning the match in an exhausting 70-minute battle.
Similarly, Tanya Hemanth emerged victorious in a three-game duel against Canada’s Jackie Dent. After a tightly contested match, Hemanth clinched victory with scores of 21-13, 20-22, 21-14 in 54 minutes.
In the women’s singles, Anupama Upadhyaya advanced with a straightforward win, defeating Ireland’s Rachael Darragh 21-11, 21-11. The mixed doubles team of Rohan Kapoor and Ruthvika Gadde also progressed with ease, securing a dominant win over fellow Indians Tarun Kona and Sri Krishna Priya Kudaravalli, achieving identical scores of 21-9, 21-9.
However, not all Indian participants enjoyed success. Sankar Muthusamy and Ayush Shetty faced early exits in the men’s singles category. Sankar lost to France’s Alex Lanier with scores of 16-21, 17-21. Meanwhile, Ayush Shetty was outplayed by Japan’s sixth seed Koki Watanabe, falling 14-21, 11-21.
Overall, while Rajawat’s unexpected triumph and other notable wins provided highlights, the mixed fortunes reflected the unpredictable nature of the tournament for India’s shuttlers.
