Former RBI Governor Urjit Patel Takes Charge as India’s Executive Director at IMF
The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved Dr. Urjit Patel, an esteemed economist and former Governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), for the position of Executive Director at the International Monetary Fund (IMF). This appointment is set for a term of three years, effective from the date he assumes office, unless further directives are issued.
Dr. Patel, who served as the 24th RBI governor starting in 2016, took over from Raghuram Rajan. He made headlines when he resigned in December 2018 for personal reasons, becoming the first RBI governor since 1992 to leave before completing his term. Prior to his governorship, Patel held the role of deputy governor at the RBI, where he was responsible for areas such as monetary policy, research, statistics, information management, deposit insurance, and communication.
This new appointment follows the recent removal of Dr. Krishnamurthy Subramanian from his IMF position in May, which occurred six months prior to the end of his tenure.
