Catastrophic Downpour in Noida: Heavy Rains Trigger Landslides and Cloudbursts, Devastating Uttarakhand

Heavy rains in Noida have disrupted daily life, prompting the Meteorological Department to issue a red alert following significant downpours on Friday morning. The Regional Meteorological Centre in Delhi forecasted “moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning” for the National Capital Region (NCR). A nowcast warning, released at 9:00 AM, indicated continued precipitation in Delhi-NCR over the next two hours, with areas such as Preet Vihar, Akshardham, Nehru Stadium, Defence Colony, Lajpat Nagar, Malviyanagar, Kalkaji, Mahrauli, Tughlakabad, Chhattarpur, IGNOU, Ayanagar, Deramandi, and Gurugram identified as likely recipients of rainfall.

Visuals from Sangam Vihar Neem Chowk Road show significant waterlogging, which has exacerbated travel difficulties. In the wake of the rains, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a yellow alert for Gautam Buddha Nagar and Ghaziabad in Uttar Pradesh. In Delhi, this alert affects regions such as South East Delhi, Central Delhi, Shahdara, and East Delhi, while western parts of the capital are expected to experience light rain or drizzle throughout the day.

The IMD’s weather outlook extends beyond Noida, predicting heavy rainfall for regions including Uttarakhand, Arunachal Pradesh, and parts of Maharashtra and Karnataka. An orange alert is in effect for these areas on August 29, highlighting the potential for heavy to very heavy downpours across Telangana, Konkan, Goa, and Madhya Maharashtra.

According to the latest weather bulletin from IMD, isolated heavy rainfall is expected in Kerala on August 29, as well as on September 2 and 3. Interior Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh are also anticipated to experience heavy rains on August 29 and September 3, respectively. Other regions forecasted for rainfall include parts of Chhattisgarh, East Madhya Pradesh, sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, and Vidarbha, extending through various dates over the coming week.

The situation in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand has also escalated, with reports of two people missing after a cloudburst in the Dewal area. Continuous heavy rain has led to road closures, while Rudraprayag Police have warned of rising water levels in the Alaknanda and Mandakini rivers. Citizens are advised to stay clear of riverbanks and seek safer areas. A landslide in Kaleshwar further compounded the danger, reflecting the severe impact of ongoing weather conditions.

As heavy rains continue across northern India, authorities are monitoring the situation closely. Public safety is paramount as meteorological predictions evolve, ensuring that residents remain informed and alert amid this challenging weather event. With conditions expected to persist, staying updated on alerts and guidance from local weather agencies remains crucial for all residents in the affected areas.
