An Assam Rifles patrol came under suspected militant fire near the India-Myanmar border in Arunachal Pradesh’s Changlang district on Tuesday morning, killing a soldier and injuring four others, officials said.
The attack occurred at around 6.30 am near Nampong Nallah under Nampong circle. Personnel from the 21 Assam Rifles were conducting patrols along the border amid ongoing work to construct a security fence.
Havildar Jankhokai Kuki, 42, was killed in the firing, while four other members of the patrol were injured, according to preliminary reports.
Security forces subsequently launched operations in the area to locate those responsible and secure the affected border stretch. Officials said the precise circumstances of the attack and the sequence of events were still being established.
Initial information suggested that cadres of the NSCN-K-YA, also known as the Yung Aung faction, may have been involved. Security agencies were working to verify the attackers’ identities.
The incident has led to increased vigilance along the border, particularly as authorities continue efforts to strengthen surveillance through fencing. Further details were awaited as security operations continued in the region.
