Cochin Shipyard Delivers 15th Water Metro Ferry to KWML

Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) has successfully delivered the 15th Water Metro ferry to Kochi Water Metro Limited (KWML) in a formal ceremony held on Saturday, July 20. This marks another milestone in the ongoing collaboration between the two entities, with CSL currently constructing a total of twenty-three 100-passenger electric-hybrid ferries for KWML. Another six ferries are projected to be delivered by October, while the final two in this batch are slated for an early 2025 handover.

The newly delivered ferry will initially serve as a spare. KWML anticipates the arrival of three more ferries to launch operations along the High Court-Mattancherry corridor. The upcoming Mattancherry terminal, which will accommodate up to four ferries simultaneously, is expected to be operational by October.

Currently, KWML operates ferries connecting ten key terminals: Vyttila, Kakkanad, High Court, Bolgatty, Vypeen, Fort Kochi, South Chittoor, Eloor, Cheranalloor, and North Mulavukad. The terminals at Willingdon Island and Kumbalam are anticipated to be ready by September. Additionally, KWML has extended the tender submission deadline to August for another fleet of fifteen 50-passenger ferries.

The handover ceremony featured the signing of the delivery protocol, with Harikrishnan S., Chief General Manager of CSL, and Shaji P. Janardhanan, Chief General Manager of KWML, representing their respective organizations. CSL’s electric-hybrid ferries are designed to offer an efficient, eco-friendly, and convenient travel option, emphasizing sustainability.

This partnership highlights the capabilities and potential for excellence within India’s shipbuilding sector, affirming the commitment of both CSL and KWML to advancing sustainable public transportation.
