Parth Bhut’s 6/7 Leaves Assam on Brink of Ranji Defeat
Left-arm spinner Parth Bhut tore through Assam with a devastating second-innings spell of six for seven, leaving Saurashtra on the brink of their first outright win of the Ranji Trophy season after Day 3 of their Group B match in Rajkot on Wednesday. Assam reached stumps at 65 for seven in their second innings, still 41 runs behind with only three wickets in hand.
Saurashtra had resumed the day at 156 for four and went on to post 387 in their first innings, taking a 106-run lead over Assam’s 281. Hetvik Kotak top-scored with a patient 80, while Prerak Mankad made 76. Lower-order batter Arth Yadav then frustrated the visitors with an unbeaten 46, helping the hosts move their advantage past 100.
Bhut’s six-for-seven then dismantled Assam’s second innings and put Saurashtra firmly in control. Sibsankar Roy, who scored the only century of the match in the first innings, remained unbeaten on 32 and was the lone batter to offer meaningful resistance. Veteran India all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja chipped in with a wicket, while captain Jaydev Unadkat went wicketless.
Saurashtra, who had already secured first-innings lead points in their opening two matches, are now on course for at least a full six-point haul. Assam, meanwhile, are staring at their first defeat of the campaign.
In Ranchi, rain prevented a single ball from being bowled on the third day of Delhi’s third-round match against Jharkhand, effectively ending the visiting side’s hopes of an outright win. Jharkhand were 131 for four at stumps on Day 2, replying to Delhi’s 515 for five declared.
