Congress Gears Up for Public Impeachment of CEC Gyanesh Kumar
The Congress on Wednesday accused Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar of violating the “letter and spirit of the Constitution” and said the INDIA bloc will hold a “public impeachment” of him on October 30 at 3:30 pm at party president Mallikarjun Kharge’s official residence, 10 Rajaji Marg, New Delhi, after being denied other venues. Congress general secretary in-charge communications Jairam Ramesh said on X that the INDIA bloc would hold the event after other locations were denied.
Ramesh alleged that the CEC has “demonstrably violated the letter and spirit of the Constitution,” “systematically subverted the very foundations of our electoral democracy,” and, “to put it bluntly, lied to the Supreme Court.” He also called Kumar the “willing executioner on behalf of the Diabolical Duo whose turn will come next,” in an apparent attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah.
The Congress had claimed on Tuesday that it was denied permission to hold the “public impeachment” of CEC Kumar and accused the government of trying to “silence” the voice of common people after “destroying” the electoral system. Congress general secretary (organisation) K.C. Venugopal claimed the government-run Ashok Hotel initially allowed permission to host the event but later denied it after police intervention. He said the Congress had booked Ramlila Maidan from October 25 to November 3 and decided to shift the event to the site.
Venugopal said 21 parties of the INDIA bloc had planned the “public impeachment” of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar as a curtain raiser on October 30 for the November 1 rally at Ramlila Maidan on the “vote theft” charge. He said party workers were stopped by police two days earlier while constructing infrastructure at the site. “We don’t know what the reason is,” he said, adding that the decision was not the Delhi Police’s but that of PM Modi and Amit Shah, who he alleged were protecting “their pet Gyanesh Kumar.”
Venugopal alleged that the government first destroys the electoral system and then tries to silence those fighting to save democracy. “Let it be very clear, come what may, we will not rest until Modi-Shah’s puppet Gyanesh Kumar is removed,” he said in a post on X. “If they stop us here, we will go to Amit Shah’s house, PM Modi’s house, and stage a massive sit-in there. But we will fight to the finish, and until our mission is accomplished.” He also asked how many permissions the government would deny and how many people it would stop.
The INDIA bloc had also explored several venues, including Talkatora Stadium, Constitution Club, Mavlankar Hall, Dr Ambedkar International Centre and Ashok Hotel, but was unable to secure permission or bookings, according to PTI.
