PM Modi’s Powerful Plea to Putin: End the Heartbreaking Ukraine Conflict
In the wake of a children’s hospital in Kyiv being destroyed amid Russian strikes, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi conveyed deep concern to Russian President Vladimir Putin over the loss of innocent lives, particularly children. During their bilateral meeting on Tuesday, Modi expressed that such tragedies cause immense pain, emphasizing the importance of peace. The meeting marked the end of Modi’s two-day visit to Russia and was the first face-to-face engagement since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
Modi underscored the expectations of the Global South for peace and stability, reinforcing that battlefield solutions are unachievable, a message also conveyed during a private dinner the previous evening. He stressed India’s commitment to peace and readiness to assist in its restoration, noting that dialogue and diplomacy are essential.
Foreign Secretary Vinay Kwatra echoed Modi’s sentiments, highlighting the Prime Minister’s clear condemnation of the innocent deaths, particularly children, and asserting that the conflict’s resolution lies off the battlefield.
The meeting also focused on economic cooperation, particularly in energy, trade, manufacturing, and fertilizers. Despite Western criticism, India has emerged as a significant purchaser of Russian oil, benefiting both nations and stabilizing the global oil market. Modi affirmed that this cooperation helped shield Indian citizens from fuel shortages and indirectly aided global market stability.
Addressing broader issues, Modi condemned terrorism, citing terror challenges in Jammu and Kashmir. He noted the compounded global crises due to COVID-19 and various conflicts, praising the India-Russia partnership for mitigating food, fuel, and fertilizer shortages, benefiting Indian farmers and contributing to global stability.
The discussions concluded with Modi optimistic about strengthening India-Russia ties, reinforcing the enduring economic and strategic partnership between the two nations amidst global challenges.
