Unprecedented Chaos Grips State with Unstoppable Fury!
The people of Assam have historically contended with floods, but recent events have caught them off guard with unprecedented timing, intensity, and scope. The flooding of Majuli, a riverine island, and three successive flood waves in 2024 demonstrate significant changes in the region’s hydrodynamics, particularly along the Brahmaputra river over the last 50 years.
Partha Jyoti Das, who leads the climate and water hazards division at the non-profit Aaranyak, highlighted the suddenness of the Majuli flooding. This event resulted from a dual onslaught: the rising Brahmaputra waters and the torrent from its tributary, the Subansiri.
Such flash flooding is notably more perilous than traditional floods, posing new challenges and risks for the affected populations. This evolving flood pattern underscores the urgent need for adaptive measures and enhanced preparedness in Assam.
