NEET UG 2024 Hearing Live Updates: Supreme Court to Hear Re-exam Pleas Today
On July 18, 2024, a Supreme Court bench led by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud will address multiple petitions seeking the re-examination and cancellation of NEET UG 2024 results due to an alleged paper leak and other irregularities. Previously, the CJI acknowledged the paper leak, emphasizing that the exam’s integrity had been compromised, and the court is now deliberating the repercussions.
Ahead of the hearing, the National Testing Agency (NTA) claimed there was no systemic failure in conducting the exam. Dismissing the petitioners’ allegations of unprecedented high marks as misconceived, the NTA argued that the accusations were based on unverified sources and misleading media reports.
The bench, which also includes justices J B Pardiwala and Manoj Misra, will hear over 40 pleas, including those from the NTA seeking to transfer cases pending in various high courts to the Supreme Court to prevent litigation redundancy.
During the last hearing on July 11, the court postponed the case, stating that some parties had not yet received responses from the Centre and the NTA. The CJI notified that the court had received a status report from the CBI related to the investigation into the alleged paper leak, to be considered today.
In an affidavit, the Centre reinforced the integrity of NEET-UG 2024, citing an IIT-Madras data analysis which found no mass malpractice. The NTA also submitted that the alleged paper leak videos on Telegram were fabricated and that a drop in the test syllabus and an increase in candidates explained the higher marks.
The NTA addressed the potential impact on deserving candidates, emphasizing that selection is based on rank, not marks. It stated that the distribution of marks was normal and dismissed claims of a systemic failure.
