Shocking Action: KSU Compassionately Repatriates Over 2500 Unverified Migrants in Meghalaya
The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) has reportedly turned away over 2,500 migrant workers in the Khasi-Jaintia region due to lack of valid documents, according to KSU president Lambokstarwell Marngar. Over the past 12 days, the union has been conducting document checks at construction sites throughout the region.
Marngar’s announcement coincided with the 189th death anniversary of renowned Khasi freedom fighter, U Tirot Sing Syiem, in an event held in Shillong on July 17. Marngar criticized the state government’s failure to enforce existing laws such as the Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Act (MRSSA), 2016, and called for the immediate implementation of the Inner Line Permit (ILP) to control the influx of migrants.
Further inspection campaigns are planned as a form of protest and an appeal for the state authorities to address the issue. Marngar revealed that the KSU intends to collaborate with other NGOs to explore additional strategies. Despite government-police actions against the union, Marngar vowed to continue the document checks. He questioned the government’s inactivity, citing the recent detection of six Bangladeshi nationals in Shillong as evidence of weak enforcement.
Marngar highlighted the confusion over state labor regulations, questioning amendments made to the Meghalaya Inter-State Migrant Workmen (Regulation of Employment and Condition of Service) Rules, 2011, and the implementation of the Meghalaya Identification, Registration (Safety & Security) of Migrant Workers Act, 2020.
Additionally, Marngar condemned the government’s alleged orders for nighttime police actions against union members. He emphasized the temporary nature of governmental posts and suggested that both small and large roles are essential for progress.
In conclusion, Marngar asserted that despite governmental pressure, the KSU will persist in their document-checking initiative as a necessary measure to protect the indigenous community and prompt government action.
