Assam Launches Bold Tech-Led Crime Crackdown, Says Himanta Biswa Sarma
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on July 18 that the state government will continue its crackdown on crime, presenting official data that, he said, show a sharp fall in criminal activity and improved prosecution outcomes between 2021 and June 2026. According to figures shared by Sarma, total crime registration fell 85%, from 133,239 cases in 2021 to 20,582 by June 2026; cases under investigation dropped by 92%; and the crime rate per 100,000 people fell from 379 to 112, a decline of roughly 70%.
The data also showed marked gains in the criminal justice process: the chargesheet rate rose from 39.4% in 2021 to 86.6% by June 2026, and the conviction rate increased from 6.1% to 25.3% over the same period. (Chargesheet rate refers to the share of recorded cases in which formal charges are filed; conviction rate indicates the proportion of cases resulting in a guilty verdict.)
Sarma said the government has worked “relentlessly” to strengthen law enforcement and public safety and credited these measures for the improvements. He added in a post on X that Assam Police will keep adopting modern, technology-driven policing practices to sustain the momentum and further reduce crime.
The chief minister framed the figures as evidence of progress toward a “Surakshit Assam” and said the crackdown would continue. The government’s account places emphasis on enhanced investigation and prosecution as key drivers of the reported reductions; the figures cited cover the period from calendar year 2021 through June 2026, as presented by Sarma on July 18.
