Assam’s Rs 17,235 Crore Road Plan: Transformative Connectivity Boost
Guwahati: Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma today announced a planned investment of Rs 17,235 crore for a major infrastructure package intended to significantly improve road connectivity across Assam, describing the initiative on Twitter as “one of the most ambitious connectivity overhauls in Assam till date.”
The proposed package includes the four‑laning of the Baihata Chariali–Mission Chariali stretch, construction of the Guwahati Airport–Jalukbari elevated corridor, and a new bridge over the Brahmaputra linking Morigaon and Darrang districts. These projects are presented as targeted interventions to strengthen key transport corridors in and around the state capital and beyond.
Sarma’s post emphasised the scale and priority of the programme: “With a planned investment of Rs 17,235 crore, we are driving one of the most ambitious connectivity overhauls in Assam till date,” he wrote. The announcement highlights the state government’s stated commitment to expanding and modernising Assam’s transport network.
Officials say the works are expected to cut travel times, improve road links between important commercial and residential areas, and provide an additional Brahmaputra crossing to ease congestion and strengthen connections between north and south Assam. The new bridge, in particular, is presented as a strategic link to improve mobility and regional integration.
Framed as part of a broader strategy to boost accessibility and support economic growth, the projects are projected to facilitate smoother movement of people and goods, bolster trade and commerce, and contribute to long‑term state development. Implementation timelines, funding details and clearances were not specified in the announcement.
