Dhubri Crash: One Dead, Another Critical — Driver Flees Scene
A hit-and-run on National Highway 127B in Moterjhar, Dhubri district, in the early hours of Thursday, February 12, left one man dead and another critically injured after a speeding dumper truck reportedly loaded with stones rammed into an e-rickshaw. The collision occurred at dawn and devastated the smaller vehicle, witnesses said.
Eyewitnesses told reporters the heavy dumper was travelling at high speed before it struck the e-rickshaw, leaving both occupants badly hurt on the roadside. The force of the impact caused catastrophic damage to the passenger vehicle.
One of the occupants, identified as Anil Malakar of Amtola in Moterjhar, succumbed to his injuries shortly after the crash. Relatives and neighbours described him as a humble, hardworking man, and his sudden death has deeply affected the local community.
The second victim, Khaybar Ali, popularly known as “Bheku,” suffered grievous injuries and remains in critical condition. He is undergoing emergency treatment, and family members and neighbours say his condition is a matter of serious concern.
After the collision, the driver of the dumper fled the scene, driving away with the vehicle before authorities arrived. The hit-and-run sparked widespread anger among residents, who have long complained about reckless driving and frequent accidents along the busy highway.
Within hours, hundreds of agitated locals gathered on NH-127B and staged a road blockade, bringing traffic to a standstill for several hours. Protesters demanded the immediate arrest of the absconding driver and called for stricter enforcement of traffic rules, particularly against overloaded and speeding heavy vehicles on the route.
Golokganj police were alerted and reached the spot, dispersing the crowd and restoring vehicular movement. Police sources said a thorough investigation has been launched, officers are tracing the dumper’s route using available leads, and they expressed confidence that the driver will be apprehended soon. The body of the deceased has been sent for post-mortem examination as required by law.
The tragedy has once again highlighted concerns over highway safety in the region, with residents urging authorities to take concrete measures to prevent similar fatal incidents in the future.
