Over 10 trade and farmers’ unions are participating in a nationwide Bharat Bandh today, a strike aimed at protesting what they describe as the Centre’s “anti-worker, anti-farmer, and pro-corporate” policies. According to a coalition of ten central trade unions, approximately 30 crore workers are expected to join the general strike across India, significantly exceeding the participation seen in previous mobilisations. Amarjeet Kaur, General Secretary of the All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC), stated at a press conference, “Not less than 30 crore workers will join the strike on February 12. This is a notable increase from the 25 crore workers who participated in the protest on July 9, 2025.”
The unions involved anticipate that the strike will affect operations in over 600 districts, up from about 550 during last year’s agitation, underscoring the growing momentum of the movement. They have garnered support from a wide array of groups, including farmers, agricultural labour unions, students, and youth organizations, amplifying their call for collective action against government policies.
While essential services such as hospitals and emergency health services are expected to remain operational, disruptions are anticipated across multiple sectors. Public sector banks and insurance offices, state transport services, and government offices are likely to be affected, along with industrial units, manufacturing hubs, and rural employment programs under MGNREGA in protest areas. The extent of these impacts is expected to vary based on local participation.
The Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM) has thrown its full support behind the strike, indicating a robust alliance amongst farmers’ unions with a particular focus on restoring MGNREGA. Kaur expressed confidence that even in states ruled by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the strike would resonate strongly. She mentioned, “Odisha and Assam are expected to be completely shut, while other states will see widespread participation.”
Strike notices have been dispatched across various sectors, including government departments, public sector undertakings, and private establishments. Extensive campaigning has been conducted at district and block levels in both rural and urban communities to mobilize support.
As the Bharat Bandh unfolds today, observers will closely monitor how it impacts daily life and services across India, with many citizens evaluating which aspects of their routine may be disrupted or remain operational during the strike. While some businesses and educational institutions may choose to close in solidarity, others may operate based on regional decisions.
