Assam’s Agriculture to Soar Under Rashtriya Dalhan Aatmanirbharta
Assam’s agriculture sector is poised to gain from the central government’s Rashtriya Dalhan Aatmanirbharta Mission after detailed talks between state and union leaders during a visit by Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan to Guwahati. Assam Minister Atul Bora said on February 11, 2026, that the mission-launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on October 11, 2025 with an allocation of Rs 11,440 crore-will strengthen pulse production, reduce import dependence and improve incomes for local farmers.
Bora told the media that implementation of the mission was discussed at length with the Union minister and that concrete steps would follow. He said officials aim to bolster on-ground infrastructure and support services, including the provision of pulse mills to farmer groups. “He visited here today, and we had a discussion. There is the Rashtriya Dalhan Aatmanirbharta Mission. This will benefit the farmers. We will be able to provide mills to farmers. Under the able guidance of Prime Minister Modi, we are doing a lot of work for farmers,” Bora said.
The Dalhan Aatmanirbharta Mission’s stated objective is to raise domestic pulse output, secure better market returns for growers and lessen the country’s reliance on imports-goals aligned with national efforts to boost agricultural self-reliance. The central funding and targeted interventions are intended to support processing, storage and market linkages across pulse value chains.
A day earlier in Guwahati, Union Minister Chouhan framed the mission and other initiatives as part of a broader push for regional development. He said Assam and the entire Northeast are scripting a “new chapter of development” and described the recently presented Union Budget as more than a financial plan, calling it a roadmap for the aspirations of 140 crore Indians. “This budget is not just a document of figures. It opens the sky high for the dreams of 140 crore Indians to take a new flight,” he said.
State and central officials say the combined focus on funding, infrastructure and policy support should act as a catalyst for more resilient pulse cultivation and improved livelihoods for farmers across Assam and the Northeast.
