Experience the Joy: Mizoram’s Heartfelt Christmas Celebrations

Christmas was celebrated throughout Mizoram on December 25, with the Christian community coming together to honor the birth of Jesus Christ through various church services and cultural events. Churches of differing denominations held prayers and worship services, attracting large congregations in line with longstanding traditions.

A highlight of the celebrations included group songs and special performances by youth members and children, conveying messages of love, peace, and joy. After the church services, congregational singing sessions, known locally as ‘Zaikhawm,’ brought the community together, showcasing the communal spirit of Christmas in Mizoram.

The festivities commenced on Wednesday evening, referred to locally as ‘Urlawk zan,’ during which worship services and dedication programs were organized alongside singing. The Roman Catholic Church marked a significant moment of the holiday with a midnight mass on Christmas Eve.

In the predominantly Christian state of Mizoram, many churches celebrate Christmas over two days, although in some areas, the festivities can extend up to a week, depending on local practices. A traditional high tea, known as ‘Thingpui ruai,’ was served on Thursday, with community feasts planned for Friday by various churches, including the Mizoram Presbyterian Church and the Baptist Church of Mizoram. Some indigenous congregations even began their communal feasts on Thursday.

Mizoram has a rich tradition of blending religious devotion with unique Mizo customs, celebrating the centenary of Christianity’s arrival in the state in 1994. Despite the adoption of some Western-style celebrations in recent years, the Mizo people remain committed to preserving their historical and cultural practices.

It is worth noting that certain Christian denominations, such as the Seventh-day Adventist Church, do not participate in the Christmas festivities.
