President Droupadi Murmu, Vice President C P Radhakrishnan, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi were among key dignitaries who attended a prayer ceremony at ‘Sadaiv Atal,’ the memorial of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, on Thursday, commemorating his 101st birth anniversary.

Other notable attendees included former Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, Union Ministers J P Nadda and Nirmala Sitharaman, along with several MPs and Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta. In his message during the ceremony, Prime Minister Modi praised Vajpayee’s contributions, stating that his personality, work, and leadership will remain a guiding light for the nation’s comprehensive development. “Vajpayee dedicated his entire life to good governance and nation-building. He will always be remembered as a brilliant orator and an impassioned poet,” Modi noted. Born in Gwalior in 1924, Vajpayee passed away in New Delhi on August 16, 2018. His birth anniversary is recognized as Good Governance Day by the government. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) marked the occasion with events nationwide, where leaders across the party paid homage to Vajpayee’s enduring legacy.

Atal Bihari Vajpayee, India’s 13th Prime Minister, served three terms from 1996 to 2004 and is widely regarded for his significant contributions to the country’s economic development. Notably, he oversaw ‘Operation Vijay,’ known as the Kargil War, during his time in office, and played a pivotal role in establishing India as a nuclear weapons state.

Vajpayee enjoyed a distinguished parliamentary career that spanned four decades, winning nine elections to the Lok Sabha and two to the Rajya Sabha. He rose from humble beginnings in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, to the pinnacle of Indian politics. For his dedicated service to the nation, he was awarded the Padma Vibhushan in 1992 and the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honor, in 2015. Throughout his career, Vajpayee championed democratic values, women’s empowerment, and social equality.

As Prime Minister, he focused on good governance and economic progress, advancing infrastructure projects such as national highways and rural roads, while also expanding telecommunications.
