Aviation giant Honeywell is pioneering new cockpit alerts aimed at enhancing pilot response times during critical airport operations. Dubbed Surface Alert, or SURF-A, these alerts were recently put to the test by Honeywell’s senior test pilot, Capt. Kirk Vining, who simulated real-life near-misses at airports, including a scenario during which a Gulfstream G550 business jet obstructed the runway just moments before his aircraft was scheduled to land at Topeka Regional Airport.
The automated alert system provided essential warning, allowing Vining to execute a safe go-around. This test underscores ongoing concerns regarding runway incursions, incidents where aircraft, pedestrians, or vehicles erroneously access runways.
