Himanta Biswa Sarma Declares BPF as NDA Ally Post Bodoland Polls
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma affirmed on Saturday that the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) remains a part of the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) following the recent Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) elections. Sarma congratulated BPF chief Hagrama Mohilary for the party’s impressive performance. The BPF secured 28 out of 40 seats in the BTC polls. In contrast, the BJP and the United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL), who jointly governed for the past five years, won seven and five seats, respectively. Sarma emphasized that the BPF continues to be part of the NDA, effectively controlling all 40 seats in the BTC as well as the North-East Democratic Alliance (NEDA) constituencies.
At a program event, Sarma stated, “I congratulate Mohilary and the BPF on their victory in the BTC polls. The BPF is also part of the NDA, and now all 40 seats of BTC are held by NDA constituents.” He further assured that Mohilary would collaborate with him and the BJP on BTC-related matters, confirming that there are no issues within the alliance. “We will continue to work together,” he added, noting that the election results might have differed had it not been for the “unfortunate death of Zubeen Garg.”
Sarma mentioned that the BJP narrowly lost in some constituencies and could have potentially won 10 to 11 seats; however, he highlighted that the party’s overall vote share had significantly increased. In a pointed remark aimed at the Congress party, which failed to secure any seats in the BTC elections, Sarma asserted, “People have already realized that its leader is a Pakistani agent,” a clear reference to Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi. He added that the upcoming Special Investigation Team (SIT) report-which investigates alleged connections to individuals in Pakistan-would clarify why Congress has struggled to earn public trust.
Sarma confirmed that the SIT report would be discussed at the cabinet meeting on October 4, after which the government plans to take necessary actions.
