Beyond Borders: India’s Agni-5 Missile’s Threat to Global Powers
India has successfully test-fired its Agni-5 ultra long-range ballistic missile, which has heightened concerns among neighboring countries, particularly China and Pakistan. The missile, dubbed India’s “Brahmastra,” has the capability to target enemy cities within minutes, significantly amplifying India’s strategic defense capabilities. Alongside China and Pakistan, the Agni-5 is also able to reach five other countries, including Russia, Iraq, and Saudi Arabia.
This nuclear-capable missile boasts a range of 5,000 kilometers, which can be extended to nearly 7,000 kilometers if necessary. It is designed to carry either a nuclear or conventional warhead weighing up to 8 tonnes, positioning it as one of the most formidable weapons in India’s arsenal. The Agni-5 can operate in two modes: as an airburst missile, causing widespread destruction over military installations, or as a bunker buster, aimed at underground facilities or nuclear sites up to 80 kilometers deep.
Weighing approximately 50 tonnes, the missile is equipped with Multiple Independently Targetable Reentry Vehicle (MIRV) technology, enabling it to strike multiple targets simultaneously. A range analysis reveals that the Agni-5 can cover all of China and Pakistan, and it can also reach Japan to the east, southern Russia to the north, and the waters off Australia to the south.
The recent test highlights not only the missile’s substantial reach but also its capability to reinforce India’s position in regional and global security dynamics. According to a September 2024 report from the Federation of American Scientists, the Agni-5 missile remains housed in a sealed canister on its launcher, allowing for a warhead to be permanently attached, streamlining its deployment.
As one of the longest-range and deadliest missiles in India’s arsenal, the Agni-5 presents significant implications for geopolitics in South Asia and beyond. This development underscores a critical shift in military balance and strategic deterrence in a region marked by historical tensions.
