The 11th Round of the India-Australia Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement (Ind-Aus CECA) concluded on August 23, further enhancing the aim of strengthening bilateral trade and economic partnerships, according to a statement from the Ministry of Commerce and Industry. Negotiations took place in New Delhi from August 18 to 23.
Building on progress from previous meetings, the talks addressed a broad range of topics including goods, services and mobility, digital trade, rules of origin, legal and institutional provisions, as well as environment, labor, and gender issues. This comprehensive discussion aimed to foster convergence on remaining provisions, the Ministry noted.
Both nations reiterated their commitment to advancing the CECA and emphasized the importance of achieving significant economic benefits and balanced outcomes. To sustain the momentum, they plan to continue negotiations through virtual intersessional meetings.
Looking to the future, the Ministry expressed optimism about aligning both countries towards a mutually beneficial economic framework, indicating a strong desire for a timely conclusion to the agreement. This round reflects a dedication to bolstering economic ties, intertwining domestic priorities with international aspirations, as India seeks to amplify its influence through various trade agreements.
Earlier this month, India and Australia also engaged in a dialogue on disarmament, non-proliferation, and export control in New Delhi. The discussions covered crucial areas such as nuclear, chemical, and biological disarmament, outer space security, and the implications of artificial intelligence in military applications.
Vanessa Wood, the Australian Ambassador for Arms Control and Counter-Proliferation, led her country’s delegation, while the Indian side was represented by Muanpuii Saiawi, Joint Secretary for Disarmament and International Security Affairs at the Ministry of External Affairs.
