Severe Weather Alert: IMD Issues YELLOW Warning for Delhi – Thunderstorms & Lightning Expected Today!
Delhi is bracing for turbulent weather as the Regional Meteorological Centre has issued a yellow alert, warning of possible thunderstorms and lightning in the area. This alert will remain in effect until June 3. Although there is currently no significant rainfall warning, light showers are anticipated throughout the day, with weather conditions expected to stay partly cloudy.
The Meteorological Department has reported, “Partly cloudy sky, very light to light rain/thunderstorm/lightning, and gusty winds (with speeds between 40 to 50 kmph), temporarily reaching up to 60 kmph during thunderstorms.” Just a day prior, residents of Delhi-NCR experienced sudden weather shifts, characterized by strong winds and overcast skies. Today’s temperatures are projected to be below normal, with highs around 37-39 degrees Celsius-one to three degrees lower than seasonal averages. The minimum temperature is expected to hover between 25 and 27 degrees Celsius.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) highlighted the unusual weather changes on June 1, following a blanket of dark clouds that enveloped the region. In a release on May 31, the IMD warned of light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds affecting multiple regions, including Jammu-Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, and parts of Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan. These conditions are expected to persist until June 4.
In a broader context, while Delhi is under a yellow alert, the IMD has issued an orange alert for all seven northeastern states, indicating the potential for heavy rainfall. States like Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, and Arunachal Pradesh are likely to experience significant downpours today. Moreover, Himachal Pradesh is also on orange alert as severe weather is forecasted.
As the monsoon season approaches, similar weather patterns are anticipated to continue in Delhi and surrounding areas, making it crucial for residents to stay updated. The sudden shift in weather underscores the unpredictability of the monsoon, and authorities are advising caution.
Stay tuned for further updates as the situation develops, and make sure to take necessary precautions if you’re in affected areas.
