Arunachal Activist Ebo Mili Reveals Police Intimidation at Protest Site

Human rights defender and anti-mega dam activist Ebo Mili has disclosed that he was compelled to leave Parong village in Arunachal Pradesh to ensure the safety of himself and local villagers. This decision followed a police complaint lodged against him by the District Magistrate of Boleng.

Mili, who had been reported missing amid rising tensions in the Upper Siang and Siang districts concerning the deployment of armed personnel for the 12,000 MW Siang Upper Multipurpose Project, confirmed his safety on Friday.

He elaborated that while traveling to Shi-Yomi, he encountered a landslide in the Tato area, which forced him to seek refuge at a GREF camp. Mili kept his mobile phone switched off due to previous incidents of police tracking his location.

His extended journey was hindered by multiple roadblocks, and by the time he regained mobile service, rumors of his disappearance had already spread.

Mili expressed gratitude to fellow activist Bhanu Tatak and local villagers for their efforts in pressuring the deputy commissioner, which helped prevent his arrest despite the police complaint. He also thanked the Adi community and other supporters for their active protests against the dam.

The police complaint against Mili, filed on Monday by District Commissioner PN Thungon, accused him of leading a group of 80-90 individuals at the Beging protest site on May 22. This location is where drilling machines and other equipment for the dam have been stationed. However, villagers from Beging have denied these allegations, asserting that Mili was there solely in his role as legal counsel for the SIFF and did not incite any unlawful behavior.
