Why Migraines May Trigger Cravings for Coke and Fries

Many of us often self-medicate with coffee or chocolate when we’re feeling tired or stressed, but when a headache strikes, we typically reach for painkillers. Recently, a viral claim suggests that a large Coca-Cola and fries can relieve migraines, and surprisingly, there’s some truth to this. The caffeine in Coca-Cola acts as a vasoconstrictor, narrowing blood vessels and counteracting the dilation that occurs during a migraine, which is a key contributor to the pain. This is why caffeine is frequently found in over-the-counter headache medications.

When blood vessels expand, they can irritate nearby pain-sensitive nerves, particularly those in the trigeminal system, which transmits sensory information from the head and face to the brain, resulting in that familiar throbbing sensation. The sugar and salt in Coca-Cola and fries may also help stabilize blood sugar and electrolyte levels, which can fluctuate during migraines.

To fully grasp why this combination may alleviate migraine symptoms, it’s essential to understand the migraine process itself, which can be triggered by a variety of factors, including hormonal changes, stress, skipped meals, specific foods, and even environmental changes. A migraine is not just a typical headache; it is a multi-stage experience that includes phases before the pain begins, providing an opportunity for intervention.

The prodrome stage can start hours or even days before the headache, often marked by symptoms such as fatigue, irritability, or a low mood. Many suffer from migraines without recognizing this phase, which is an ideal time to take preventative action. During this stage, people frequently crave specific items—some report increased yawning to regulate dopamine levels, while others seek affection to lift serotonin. These behaviors are subconscious attempts to restore the disrupted neurotransmitter balance associated with migraines.

Intriguingly, chocolate is often thought to trigger migraines but is also rich in compounds that can boost serotonin. If serotonin levels are low, a craving for chocolate could indicate the brain’s attempt to correct this imbalance, making it a possible preventive measure during early migraine symptoms.

Following the prodrome is the aura phase, where some individuals may see flashing lights or feel unusual sensations like tingling. Although around 80% of migraine sufferers don’t experience these visual disruptions, the same electrical wave changes occur in their brains.

Next comes the pain phase, during which vascular changes in the brain signal that something is amiss. The pain arises as previously constricted blood vessels suddenly dilate, activating pain receptors and resulting in debilitating discomfort. Many migraine sufferers find that once the pain sets in, eating is the last thing on their minds, leading them to opt for medications rather than food that would help balance neurotransmitters.

Finally, the postdrome phase occurs after the pain subsides, often resembling a hangover with symptoms like fatigue, nausea, and mental fog. This phase can be just as disruptive, prolonging recovery as one transitions through all four stages of a migraine.

Understanding and recognizing the early signs of a migraine can significantly contribute to prevention. Although there’s no one-size-fits-all solution, awareness of your body’s unique signals, like cravings for chocolate or cold water, can help mitigate an impending migraine. Embracing personal strategies rooted in neuroscience can empower individuals to stay ahead of migraine pain.
