Urgent Shakeup: BJP’s Bold Move to Oust VC Shukla Stuns Political Circles!
In a significant development, the state BJP, led by Cabinet Minister Alexander L Hek, has engaged with Governor CH Vijayashankar to discuss the ongoing crisis at North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU) and advocated for the removal of Vice-Chancellor Prabha Shankar Shukla. During their meeting, the delegation briefed the Governor on their recent discussions with officials from the Ministry of Education in New Delhi regarding the university’s management issues. The BJP emphasized the importance of respecting the forthcoming report from a two-member committee investigating alleged mismanagement at NEHU and highlighted the necessity of resolving the crisis for the university’s welfare.
A focal point of their advocacy is the removal of Prof Shukla, whom the party believes is no longer supported by the stakeholders of the university, including students, teachers, and staff. The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) has reinforced this position by declaring they will prevent Shukla from entering the campus, asserting that his return could potentially obstruct the ongoing investigation. KSU President Lambokstar Marngar leveled accusations of administrative failure against Shukla and criticised his decision to seek security from central forces instead of stepping down voluntarily.
Meanwhile, the Meghalaya Joint Council of Trade Unions & Associations (MJCTU&A) has appealed to the President of India and state authorities to address the students’ demands and restore NEHU’s former prestige. They expressed concern over the prolonged protests that have continued for more than three weeks, taking a toll on the academic future of the students. The council urged a swift resolution to prevent further disruption to the student body’s academic pursuits, highlighting the need for decisive action from the central government in line with NEHU’s community interests.
