India’s Groundbreaking Hypersonic Missile Test Sends Shockwaves: A Game-Changer Leaving Rivals Sleepless
India has achieved a significant milestone in military technology with the successful flight test of its first long-range hypersonic missile. Conducted by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) on November 16, 2024, from Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Island off the Odisha coast, this missile is capable of carrying various payloads over distances exceeding 1,500 kilometers. This new capability is poised to cause concern for neighboring countries like Pakistan and China.
The missile test was meticulously tracked by multiple monitoring systems, and data from ships confirmed its precise target hit after completing its maneuvers. Developed at the DRDO’s Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Missile Complex in Hyderabad, the project saw collaborative efforts from other DRDO labs and industry partners. Senior DRDO scientists and Armed Forces officials witnessed the successful test.
Defense Minister Rajnath Singh lauded this achievement on social media, calling it a historic moment that elevates India to the ranks of nations with advanced military technology. DRDO Chairman Dr. Samir V Kamat praised the team’s efforts, acknowledging their crucial role in this success.
Hypersonic missiles, which travel at speeds exceeding Mach 5, are known for their speed and maneuverability, making them hard to detect and intercept. There are two main types: Hypersonic Glide Vehicles and Hypersonic Cruise Missiles. These weapons provide a strategic advantage by evading current defense systems.
Unlike ballistic missiles, which follow a fixed trajectory, hypersonic weapons offer greater maneuverability, complicating defense efforts. Some ground-based radars can detect them, but the current systems in place are insufficient for timely warnings, leading to discussions on developing space-based radar systems for improved detection.
Overall, this test marks a notable advancement in India’s defense capabilities, positioning the country as a formidable player in hypersonic technology.
