Heartbroken and Furious: Manipur Resident Laments Home Destroyed by Explosive Attack in Churachandpur

In a deeply disturbing event that has ignited widespread outrage, a house in Manipur’s Churachandpur district was obliterated with explosives by presumed armed miscreants. The home belonged to 43-year-old Naorem Ibomcha Meitei, who voiced his grief and indignation following a video of the destruction going viral on social media.

Ibomcha shared his devastation publicly, stating, “It breaks my heart to see my home blown into pieces. It is not just my home but a memory of my childhood and our forefathers.” He further lamented the severe ethnic violence, saying, “I never imagined in my wildest dreams that my fellow Meiteis and I would be wiped out this way.”

He criticized the security forces for their apparent failure to prevent the systematic demolition of homes in Churachandpur, spotlighting the disparity in protection compared to Kuki houses in Imphal and other districts. “The most heartbreaking part was the security forces’ inaction. If they can protect Kuki houses in Imphal, why not protect hundreds of Meitei homes in Churachandpur?” he questioned.

Ibomcha pointed fingers at local political and security leaders, including Churachandpur MLA L M Khuate and former Director General of Police P Doungel, for not intervening to protect Meitei properties. “I am confident that they could have stopped the demolition of my house and other Meitei properties if they had wanted to,” he claimed.

Calling for accountability, Ibomcha suspects that Kuki militants were behind the attack due to the use of explosives. He reiterated demands to end the ceasefire with Kuki terrorist groups.

Reflecting on his life in Churachandpur, where his licensed gun shop was reportedly vandalized and looted during the May 3, 2023 violence, Ibomcha highlighted the irony of being labeled a member of a “majority community” while living as a minority. “Living as a minority in a Kuki-dominated area has been a tragic irony and nightmare for us,” he concluded.
