Heartbreaking Viral Video: Meitei House Demolition in Churachandpur Sparks Grief and Anger
In a shocking incident that has ignited widespread outrage, a house in Manipur’s Churachandpur district was destroyed using explosives by alleged armed miscreants. The homeowner, Naorem Ibomcha Meitei, 43, expressed deep grief and anger after a video of the demolition went viral on social media.
Ibomcha voiced his heartbreak and disbelief, saying, “Seeing my home blown to pieces breaks my heart. It’s not just a house; it’s tied to the memories of my childhood and our forefathers.” He further lamented the escalating ethnic violence, adding, “I never imagined that my fellow Meiteis and I would be targeted in such a vicious manner.”
Criticizing the inaction of security forces, Ibomcha highlighted the contrast in protection provided to Kuki homes in other districts compared to Meitei homes in Churachandpur. “The security forces did nothing to stop this systematic demolition. If they can safeguard Kuki houses in Imphal and elsewhere, why can’t they protect Meitei homes in Churachandpur?” he questioned.
Ibomcha pointed fingers at local political and security leadership, particularly Churachandpur MLA L M Khuate and DGP P Doungel, for not preventing the attacks. “Had they wanted, they could have stopped the destruction of my house and other Meitei properties,” he asserted.
Calling for accountability, Ibomcha suspects that Kuki militants were involved due to the use of explosives. He reiterated longstanding demands to end the ceasefire with Kuki terrorist groups. Reflecting on his personal history, Ibomcha described operating a licensed gun shop that was vandalized and looted by alleged Kuki assailants on May 3, 2023.
Highlighting his plight, he noted the irony of being labeled part of a majority community while living as a minority in a Kuki-dominated area. “Despite being a so-called majority, we live as a minority among the dominant Kuki community, which has been our tragic irony and nightmare,” he concluded.
