A 47-year-old female resident of Kengkhu village tragically passed away while in police custody in the early hours of Friday, July 19, in Arunachal Pradesh’s Changlang district. The detainee, identified as Khomlu Haisa, had been arrested by the Changlang police on July 18 in connection with a suspected violation of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.

Tirap Superintendent of Police, Singjatla Singpho, who is currently overseeing operations at the Changlang police station, confirmed the unfortunate incident. He revealed that a postmortem examination had been conducted, although the results were pending at the time of reporting.

SP Singpho also shared that a case of unnatural death has been registered, and the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has been informed about the incident. A judicial inquiry is currently underway to investigate the circumstances surrounding Haisa’s death. Further details are awaited as the inquiry progresses.

This incident has raised concerns, prompting authorities to ensure a thorough investigation to uncover the facts. Additionally, it underscores the need for transparency and accountability in custodial cases to prevent such tragedies in the future.
