Meghalaya CM Updates on Repatriation of Students from Turbulent Bangladesh

Amid escalating civil unrest in Bangladesh, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma has provided crucial updates on efforts to repatriate students and citizens. The conflict, which erupted into severe clashes on Thursday, has resulted in multiple fatalities and significant damage, including the torching of the state broadcaster’s building.

Sangma confirmed that 284 individuals have so far entered India through the Integrated Check Post (ICP) at Dawki in Meghalaya. This group includes 115 Indians—with eight hailing from Meghalaya—168 Nepalese, and one Canadian.

In coordination with Tripura officials, the Meghalaya government is also facilitating the safe return of Indian students. Sangma tweeted that 140 students have crossed the Sonamura border, 40 through Akhaura, and an additional 200 are en route to India through Tripura.

In a further update, the Chief Minister noted that medical students from Bangladesh safely crossed the Sonamura border in Tripura. He expressed gratitude to External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha, and the Border Security Force for their continued support in the repatriation process.

As the situation in Bangladesh remains volatile, Indian authorities are diligently monitoring developments to ensure the safe return of all distressed individuals. The collaborative efforts underline the commitment to safeguarding citizens during these turbulent times.

The state government’s proactive measures and coordination with central and regional authorities underscore a concerted effort to prioritize the welfare of those caught in the chaos unfolding in Bangladesh.
