Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh announced the detention of nine individuals in connection with a significant scam involving counterfeit Inner Line Permit (ILP) cards. The state police, acting on specific intelligence, raided five locations and confiscated approximately 3,500 fake ILP labor permits. The targeted locations included a computer center in Namdulong, a mobile repair shop in Kakulong, a mobile shop in Thangal Bazar, a computer center near the Babupara DC Bungalow, and a reception counter at a laboratory center on RIMS road.
Highlighting the critical importance of the ILP system in protecting Manipur’s indigenous population, Singh emphasized that the ILP was a beneficial measure provided by the central government to safeguard local interests. However, the recent misuse of the system through the issuance of fake permits posed a severe threat.
Investigations revealed that unauthorized individuals were administering duties usually reserved for District Commissioners and Labour Commissioners. This unauthorized handling of sensitive tasks further complicated the ILP system’s integrity. In response, the Manipur government has established a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to conduct an in-depth probe into the matter.
Additionally, alerts have been dispatched to all police stations to apprehend individuals possessing counterfeit ILP cards. The chief minister also announced plans to refine the ILP issuance procedure and enforce stricter controls at all ILP checkpoints throughout the state, aiming to prevent future misuse of the system.
These measures underscore the state government’s commitment to preserving the sanctity of the ILP system and protecting the rights of Manipur’s indigenous population. The swift action against those involved in the counterfeit ILP scam reflects a zero-tolerance policy towards activities that jeopardize the state’s regulatory frameworks and local populace.
