Exciting Collaboration: Cotton University and Assam State Museum Ignite Passion for Museum Management in Groundbreaking Workshop
The Zoology Department of Cotton University and the Assam State Museum collaboratively organized a capacity-building workshop titled ‘Museum Collection, Care, and Management’ from July 16 to 20. The workshop, attended by 20 participants, focused on collection management, documentation, and conservation through hands-on activities combined with expert-led sessions, using the museum’s expansive zoological collections as practical study material.
The workshop was inaugurated by Prof. Dr. Ramesh Chandra Deka, Vice Chancellor of Cotton University, with distinguished guests including Arindom Barua, ACS, Director of Museums, ITFC Department, and Prof. Arup Kumar Hazarika, Head of the Department of Zoology & Dean of Life Sciences, Cotton University.
The expert team from Assam State Museum, which included Mrinmoy Das, DMO, Darrang and LPO I/c, Antareen Talukdar, Laboratory Chemist, Yugal Krishna Dutta, Photographer, and Hemanta Saikia, Artist cum Modeller, provided the participants with theoretical and technical knowledge. They instructed students on documenting specimens, preparing condition assessment reports, and addressing deterioration factors like light, storage, dust, and dirt.
Over 29 specimens from six different categories were chosen as case studies. These specimens were meticulously studied and documented by the participants who were introduced to conservation-grade materials necessary for proper storage and display.
The workshop was facilitated by Dr. Anjana Singha Naorem and Dr. Binita B. Baruah of the Zoology department. Highlighting the collaborative future, Arindom Barua mentioned that the Assam State Museum is in the process of signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Cotton University. This partnership aims to enhance collaborative activities in art and science, conduct analytical studies, and advance the preservation and conservation of artifacts held by both institutions.
By focusing on practical training and expert guidance, this workshop successfully equipped participants with essential skills in museum management and conservation.
