Himanta Pays Tribute to Bhupen Hazarika: A Name in Every Household
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday, November 5, paid rich tributes to the legendary musician and cultural icon Dr. Bhupen Hazarika on his death anniversary, honoring his enduring contribution to Assam’s cultural landscape and musical legacy.
In a tribute shared on social media platform X, Sarma described the revered artist-popularly known as the ‘Bard of the Brahmaputra’—as an iconic figure whose influence continues to resonate deeply across Assam and the rest of the country. The Chief Minister noted that Hazarika is a household name whose artistic impact remains unparalleled, adding that the state was fortunate to have witnessed his live performances. Offering his homage to the maestro, affectionately known as ‘Sudhakantha’, Sarma affirmed that his legacy will always be cherished.
One of India’s most eminent cultural figures, Hazarika left behind a vast body of work as a singer, composer, lyricist, and filmmaker before passing away in Mumbai in 2011. In recognition of his monumental contributions to music and the arts, he was posthumously awarded the Bharat Ratna, the nation’s highest civilian honor, in 2019.
The tribute comes amid year-long celebrations commemorating Hazarika’s birth centenary. The milestone celebrations, which commenced on September 8, 2025, are scheduled to conclude on November 29, 2026, in New Delhi in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, honoring the maestro’s life and his indelible place in India’s cultural history.
