Dibrugarh OIL Blast: Two Injured Workers Die, Toll Rises to 3
The death toll from the explosion and fire at Oil India Limited’s (OIL) Intermediate Tank Farm (ITF) in Tengakhat, Dibrugarh district, rose to three on Saturday after two critically injured workers died in hospitals. The deceased were identified as Tapas Gogoi, 40, and Rupam Gohain, 47. Gogoi died at a private hospital in Dibrugarh, while Gohain died at a private hospital in Guwahati. Raju Dutta, 45, was the first casualty, dying in Friday morning’s explosion.
According to OIL, the explosion occurred around 9:05 a.m. on Friday while workers were carrying out maintenance activities at the facility. Preliminary information suggested that an accident during the maintenance operation triggered the explosion, followed by a fire in the crude oil storage area. The exact cause of the explosion has not yet been established.
The injured workers were initially admitted to Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH) and OIL Hospital. Those with critical burn injuries were later shifted to a private nursing home in Dibrugarh for specialised medical care. Four injured workers were undergoing treatment at AMCH, officials said. The workers were employed by Spectron Engineers Private Limited, a Mumbai-based company engaged by OIL for maintenance work.
The district administration and OIL authorities continued to monitor the situation. Dibrugarh district commissioner Bikram Kairi, Senior Superintendent of Police Abhijit Gurav and other senior officials visited the site after the incident.
Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal spoke by telephone with OIL’s chairperson and managing director on Saturday to take stock of the incident. Sonowal urged the company to ensure the best possible medical treatment for all injured workers and to take necessary measures without delay. He called for appropriate compensation for the families of the deceased and, as the Dibrugarh Lok Sabha MP, sought a high-level inquiry by the relevant authorities to establish the exact cause of the explosion and fire.
