Human Remains Discovered on Ship Struck in Black Sea Off Romania
Prosecutors in Bulgaria said Saturday that human remains were found aboard a vessel that was struck by a drone off the Romanian coast two weeks ago and had been taken to Bulgaria for repairs. The prosecutor’s office in the eastern city of Varna said in a statement that “severely damaged human remains were discovered” during debris-clearing operations and that DNA testing had been ordered to identify the victims.
The vessel was not named, but prosecutors said it was sailing under the San Marino flag, matching the registration of the Wine Trader, a chemical tanker that was hit on October 15 about 24 kilometers, or 15 miles, southeast of Sulina, at the mouth of the Danube.
A Bulgarian law enforcement source told AFP that the condition of the remains made it impossible to determine the exact number of bodies with certainty, saying there were “most likely six” victims. Seven of the ship’s 12 crew members had been reported missing after the strike, while five others were rescued.
The discovery underscores the growing toll of drone attacks on shipping in the Black Sea. Since early October, at least nine merchant vessels have been struck by drones off the Romanian and Bulgarian coasts, leaving 34 people dead or missing.
