Nelson Dilipkumar’s Rajinikanth-starrer Jailer 2 has crossed another major box-office milestone, surpassing Rs 500 crore gross in India on its 15th day of release. The film’s current domestic gross stands at Rs 502.65 crore, with a net India collection of Rs 429.55 crore and worldwide gross earnings of Rs 765.15 crore.
On its third Thursday, day 15, Jailer 2 collected Rs 5.90 crore net at the domestic box office from 10,313 screens. The original Tamil version led the day’s earnings with Rs 3.20 crore from 4,462 shows, followed by the Telugu version with Rs 1.40 crore from 1,665 shows, the Hindi version with Rs 1.10 crore from 3,972 shows, and the Kannada version with Rs 20 lakh from 214 shows.
The Thursday collection marked a slight decline from the film’s third Wednesday, day 14, when it earned Rs 6.55 crore net across all languages in India. With the latest total, Jailer 2 has become only the second Tamil film ever to cross Rs 500 crore gross at the domestic box office.
The first Tamil film to achieve the feat was 2.0, the 2018 sci-fi action epic directed by S Shankar and the only other sequel Rajinikanth had starred in before Jailer 2. 2.0, a follow-up to the 2010 blockbuster Enthiraan, had amassed Rs 519 crore gross in India during its run.
Jailer 2’s domestic performance differs from 2.0’s because its Hindi release was more limited. The film faced disagreements with leading multiplex chains PVR INOX and Cinepolis over its four-week window before a streaming release. As a result, it was released only in secondary national multiplex chains and single screens across India, with most of its business coming from the Tamil and Telugu versions.
By contrast, 2.0 had a wider Hindi release, helped by Akshay Kumar’s presence as the chief antagonist. Its domestic total included Rs 225 crore gross from the dubbed Hindi version. Jailer 2 has earned about one-fifth of that, Rs 54.75 crore, from Hindi in 15 days.
Globally, Jailer 2 has already become the highest-grossing Tamil film of all time, surpassing 2.0, which collected Rs 691 crore worldwide during its lifetime. The sequel to Rajinikanth’s 2023 blockbuster Jailer also stars Ramya Krishnan, Yogi Babu, SJ Suryah, Mithun Chakraborty and Vidya Balan. Produced by Sun Pictures, the film features cameos by Mohanlal, Shivarajkumar, Jackie Shroff and Hrithik Roshan.
