Cyclone Arnab Nears Land: A.P. & Odisha on High Alert
Cyclone Arnab is rapidly approaching the coastline, prompting authorities in Andhra Pradesh and Odisha to place their coastal districts on high alert as the system nears landfall. With rough seas and strengthening winds expected along the Bay of Bengal coast, officials have intensified precautionary measures, moving to secure communities in the storm’s projected path.
In Odisha’s Ganjam district, considered among the areas most exposed to the cyclone’s impact, the administration has ordered the closure of all beaches and thrown open shelters to fishermen, including those from Andhra Pradesh and Paradeep. The move is intended to keep residents and visitors away from the shoreline, where conditions are expected to deteriorate as the storm closes in. Fisherfolk still at sea when the system strengthened have been directed to take shelter immediately.
Neighbouring Andhra Pradesh remains similarly vigilant, with the state’s coastal belt on standby as the cyclone nears land. Authorities are closely tracking the storm’s trajectory, and officials have cautioned that the timing and intensity of landfall could shift, making continued adherence to advisories essential for residents in low-lying and coastal areas.
The cyclone’s reach is expected to extend well beyond the immediate landfall zone. In West Bengal, Kolkata is likely to see cloudy skies and spells of rain as the system’s influence spreads across the region, with forecasters predicting moderate to heavy showers in several districts of the state. While the city is unlikely to bear the brunt of the cyclone, the anticipated wet weather underlines how far the storm’s outer effects can travel, potentially disrupting daily life and travel plans across eastern India.
In contrast, the India Meteorological Department has forecast a dry spell in Karnataka until November 1, indicating that the cyclone’s weather impact will remain largely confined to the Bay of Bengal coastline and the eastern states. The southern interior is expected to stay largely unaffected as the system moves toward land.
With the cyclone’s approach, disaster response agencies in both Andhra Pradesh and Odisha have been asked to remain ready for evacuation and relief operations if conditions worsen. Coastal residents have been urged to stay indoors, avoid venturing near the sea, and follow updates from official weather and administrative channels, as wind speeds and rainfall are expected to intensify in the hours around landfall.
