Bombay High Court Big Relief: Imran Khan Can Stay In India Till Nov 2
Bollywood actor Imran Khan has secured temporary relief from the Bombay High Court, with the government assuring the bench that no coercive action will be taken against him until November 2, the next date of hearing in his challenge to a notice directing him to leave India.
Khan, a US citizen holding an Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) card, has moved the court against a notice issued by the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO) directing him to exit the country by October 28.
The leave-India notice was reportedly issued over his alleged participation in a protest on October 10. The demonstration was held in solidarity with a protest in Delhi demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
Khan approached the High Court on October 17, denying that he had taken part in the gathering or joined any protest alongside any organisers. In his petition, he described the notice as “illegal, arbitrary, perverse and drastic.”
He subsequently received a show-cause notice from the FRRO asking why his OCI status should not be revoked, escalating a matter that could directly affect his ability to remain in the country.
During the hearing, Khan’s counsel, Venkatesh Dhond, highlighted the October 28 deadline looming over the actor. Additional Solicitor General Anil Singh assured the court that no coercive steps would be taken against him until the next hearing, effectively shielding the actor from any action under the existing notice in the interim.
A bench comprising Chief Justice Mahesh Chandra Tripathi and Justice Advait Sethna scheduled the matter for further hearing on November 2.
The interim assurance offers Khan immediate breathing room as the High Court examines the legality of the FRRO’s notice and the threatened revocation of his OCI status. The outcome of the case could carry wider implications for how OCI cardholders are treated when they become subjects of regulatory action tied to political activity in India.
