Tripura Opposition Leader Slams Alleged Racial Harassment in Delhi
Jitendra Chaudhury, Leader of the Opposition in the Tripura Legislative Assembly and senior CPI(M) leader, has strongly condemned the alleged racial harassment and public humiliation of a young man from Tripura in Delhi, describing the episode as an affront to the people of the entire Northeast region.
The incident, in which the young man was allegedly targeted by an affluent individual in the national capital, has triggered widespread outrage. Chaudhury said the episode amounted to a violation of the spirit of brotherhood and national unity that binds the country together.
“This is not just an issue concerning Tripura; it is a grave affront to all the people of the entire North-East region,” Chaudhury said, adding his voice to the growing chorus of protests over the matter.
The veteran leader noted that organisations from Tripura as well as other parts of the country, including Delhi, had raised their voices against the incident. He also welcomed reports of an arrest made by Delhi Police in connection with the case, while questioning the delay in taking action against the accused.
Chaudhury further pointed out that incidents involving people from the Northeast were being reported far too frequently in Delhi and other parts of North India, underlining what he indicated was a troubling pattern of discrimination faced by people from the region when they are outside their home states.
Calling for strict legal action, the Opposition leader demanded that the accused receive punishment severe enough to deter similar incidents in the future, stressing that accountability was essential to prevent a recurrence of such humiliation.
The case has once again brought into sharp focus the treatment of people from the Northeast outside the region, renewing concerns over racial harassment and the need for effective, timely action to protect citizens from discrimination, wherever they may live, study or work in the country.
