Outrage Ensues: Harsh Goenka Reveals Shocking Reasons Behind Poor City Infrastructure
Harsh Goenka, Chairman of RPG Enterprises, highlighted the issue of poor city infrastructure in India by sharing a revealing video on his social media platform X. The video posted on September 7, exposed the detrimental impact of corruption on infrastructure projects. Goenka explained that funds allocated for these projects are siphoned off by officials, contractors, and management, resulting in substandard project completion. An illustrated example showed how minimal resources remain for the actual work, leading to inadequately constructed roads being inaugurated and deemed operational despite not meeting original plans.
Compounding the problem of infrastructure woes, Mint reported on September 6 that the Indian Railway’s ambitious plan for 100 percent electrification has faced delays. Complications in the North-East and Southern regions mean the project is now likely to be completed by the end of the current financial year or early next year, instead of the initial target of 100 days post the government’s formation. This railway development is crucial for overarching infrastructure growth yet is progressing sluggishly.
In another glaring instance of infrastructure failure, a section of the Aguwani-Sultanganj bridge over the Ganga River in Bihar collapsed in August 2024. This was the third collapse of the same bridge since it first buckled in April 2022. Although there were discussions of rebuilding, the court ruled that the expense should be borne by the construction company.
Similarly, in June 2024, the roof of Terminal 1 at Delhi Airport collapsed due to heavy rainfall, tragically leading to one fatality and the cancellation of over 95 flights. Such incidents underscore the dire state of India’s infrastructure and the urgent need for stringent measures to combat corruption and ensure meticulous project execution.
