Mitchell Marsh’s brutal 90 off 38 balls, backed by Nicholas Pooran’s late fireworks, powered Lucknow Super Giants to a commanding seven-wicket win over Chennai Super Kings at the BRSABV Ekana Cricket Stadium on Friday, as LSG chased 188 in just 16.4 overs and dealt a major blow to CSK’s playoff hopes.
Chennai had posted 187 for 5, anchored by Kartik Sharma’s career-best T20 score of 71 and an unbeaten 32 from Shivam Dube. Akash Singh led the bowling with 3 for 26, while Mohammed Shami finished with 1 for 41.
Lucknow’s reply was set up by a devastating 135-run opening stand between Mitchell Marsh and Josh Inglis. Marsh was in full flow from the start, smashing nine fours and seven sixes at a strike rate of 236.84. LSG raced to 86 without loss by the end of the powerplay after Mukesh Choudhary’s first over leaked 15 runs, and the carnage continued when Marsh hammered Anshul Kamboj for four consecutive sixes and a four in the fifth over.
Marsh hit his fifty in just 21 balls, repeatedly clearing the ropes off Spencer Johnson and Noor Ahmad. Inglis contributed a valuable 36 off 32 before falling to Mukesh, and Abdul Samad was soon dismissed as well. Marsh’s innings ended in unfortunate fashion when he was run out for 90 after a straight drive from Pooran deflected onto the stumps following a brush of Mukesh’s hand at the non-striker’s end.
With CSK already deflated, Nicholas Pooran-quiet earlier-exploded at the death, smashing 32 off 17 balls with one four and four sixes to seal the chase with 20 balls to spare. Mukul Choudhary also chipped in with handy boundaries as LSG wrapped up back-to-back home victories.
Anshul Kamboj endured a night to forget, conceding 63 runs in 2.4 overs as CSK’s attack struggled once Marsh took charge. What had looked a defendable total at halfway was dismantled with ruthless efficiency by a Marsh-driven LSG.
