New Delhi, May 16 — Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi on Saturday issued a stark warning to Pakistan, saying Islamabad must decide “whether they want to be part of geography or history” if it continues to harbour terrorists and conduct operations against India. He made the remark during an interactive session, “Sena Samwad,” at the Manekshaw Centre in New Delhi, days after the country and the armed forces observed the first anniversary of Operation Sindoor.
Answering a question on how the Indian Army would respond if circumstances similar to those that prompted Operation Sindoor recurred, Gen Dwivedi reiterated India’s uncompromising stance against terrorism. “If you have heard me earlier, what I have said… that Pakistan, if it continues to harbour terrorists and operate against India, then they have to decide whether they want to be part of geography or history or not,” he said.
Though brief, the statement was a clear message amid continuing tensions along the border and persistent concerns about cross-border terrorism. It underlined the Army leadership’s readiness to act decisively if threats to India’s security re-emerge.
Operation Sindoor was launched early on May 7 last year in retaliation for the deadly Pahalgam terror attack, with Indian forces carrying out precision strikes on multiple terror infrastructure targets in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). Pakistan later launched offensives of its own, and subsequent Indian counter-offensives were conducted under the same operation. The military confrontation between the two nuclear-armed neighbours lasted nearly 88 hours and subsided after the sides reached an understanding on the evening of May 10.
