Manipur MP Bimol Akoijam to Contest 2027 Assembly Polls, Eyes Keishamthong Seat
Lok Sabha MP Angomcha Bimol Akoijam has announced his willingness to contest the 2027 Manipur Assembly elections from the Keishamthong constituency, stating that he would enter the fray if his party nominates him for the seat.
The announcement came during an event held at Keishampat Keisham Leikai Community Hall in Imphal on October 18. The gathering was organised to mark the 78th anniversary of Manipur’s first elected Assembly, which was established on October 18, 1948.
“If the party gives me the ticket, I will contest from Keishamthong Assembly Constituency,” Akoijam told the audience.
The MP’s remarks come well ahead of the 2027 state polls, with the first-time parliamentarian making clear that his candidature remains subject to his party’s decision on the ticket.
Addressing the gathering, Akoijam also used the occasion to send a message to voters, urging them to look beyond candidates’ promises of development when choosing their representatives. He said electors should instead prioritise candidates who can protect Manipur and secure the state’s future — a pointed observation that comes in the context of the ongoing challenges facing the state.
The event commemorated a significant milestone in Manipur’s political history, with the state’s first elected Assembly having been constituted 78 years ago on the very day of the gathering.
Akoijam’s declaration is likely to sharpen attention on the Keishamthong seat as the political landscape in Manipur begins to take shape ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections, with party nomination processes expected to play a decisive role in determining whether the MP makes the jump from Parliament to state politics.
