Guwahati: Vote counting for Haryana’s local body elections is set to begin on Tuesday across several key municipal corporations, councils and committees, including Ambala, Panchkula and Sonipat, officials said. Polling was conducted on Sunday and the State Election Commission reported an overall voter turnout of 54.5 percent.
The elections covered mayoral and ward councillor posts in the municipal corporations of Ambala, Panchkula and Sonipat. Voting also took place for the Rewari municipal council and the municipal committees of Sampla, Dharuhera and Uklana. In addition, by-elections to fill one vacant ward each were held in Tohana, Jhajjar, Rajound, Taraori, Kanina and Sadhaura.
Among the larger cities, Ambala recorded 54.4 percent turnout, Panchkula 52.7 percent and Sonipat 47.9 percent. Several districts reported notably higher participation: Hisar at 75.7 percent, Rewari 66.1 percent and Rohtak 79.2 percent.
Out of 8.73 lakh eligible voters (about 873,000), nearly 4.75 lakh (around 475,000) cast their ballots, according to the election commission’s figures.
The contest is mainly between the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress. BJP candidates Akshita Saini, Shyamlal Bansal and Rajiv Jain are contesting the mayoral posts in Ambala, Panchkula and Sonipat respectively, while the Congress has fielded Kulwinder Kaur, Sudha Bhardwaj and Kamal Diwan.
The results, once declared, will determine local leadership responsible for urban services and development in these municipalities, and will be watched as an indicator of party strength at the grassroots.
