Security forces intensified counter-insurgency operations across Manipur on May 11 and 12, arresting several active cadres linked to proscribed militant outfits and seizing a large cache of arms, explosives and communication equipment from multiple vulnerable areas of the state. Operations and follow-up searches were reported in Imphal East, Imphal West and Bishnupur districts.
On May 12, an active cadre of the banned Kanglei Yawol Kanna Lup (KYKL) was arrested from Nongada Makha Leikai under Lamlai Police Station in Imphal East. The detainee was identified as Toijam Sanamani Meetei, 48, a resident of Nongada Awang Leikai.
In a separate action on May 11, security personnel recovered an improvised explosive device (IED) from Tronglaobi Maning Gurukhana area under Moirang Police Station in Bishnupur district. The seizure included a wireless-controlled relay switch with batteries, gunpowder-filled plastic pouches, detonators, and assorted red and electric wires along with safety fuse wires.
A major arms recovery on May 12 from Loktak Mapal near Keipha Road (under Moirang police) yielded a bolt-action rifle, a 9 mm pistol, mortar shells, HE-36 hand grenades, smoke grenades, gelatin sticks, anti-aircraft ammunition, ballistic cartridges, shotgun shells, stun grenades, a Baofeng radio set and bulletproof plates, among other war-like stores.
During a separate search at Laisoi under Keibul Lamjao Police Station in Bishnupur, forces found two bolt-action rifles, a country-made pistol, rocket mortars, two IEDs weighing around four kilograms each, hand grenades, mortar shells, tube-launching rounds, ballistic protection jackets and helmets, detonators, communication handsets, para bombs and other incriminating materials hidden inside sacks.
Security personnel also arrested an active cadre of the KCP (PWG), Khulem Shyam Singh, 23, from Langol Laimanai under Lamphel Police Station in Imphal West; two mobile phones and an Aadhaar acknowledgement receipt were seized. Another suspect linked to NRFM, identified as Ningthoujam Thoiba Meitei alias Ton, 27, was detained at Checkon Crossing under Porompat Police Station; he hails from Khumujamba Leikai in Churachandpur and had been staying in New Checkon, Imphal East. A PREPAK cadre, Nepram Dijamani Meetei, 52, was apprehended at Canchipur Super Market under Singjamei Police Station in Imphal West; authorities recovered 11 alleged PREPAK demand letters purportedly signed by the outfit’s finance wing and a mobile phone.
Officials said area-dominance exercises and search operations are continuing in fringe and vulnerable zones. Security was tightened along National Highway-37, where 156 vehicles carrying essential commodities were escorted under armed protection to ensure uninterrupted supply through sensitive stretches. Police and security agencies have also set up 115 nakas (checkpoints) across hill and valley districts as part of heightened surveillance and anti-insurgency measures.
