Fiery Showdown: Tripura CPIM-Congress Clash Intensifies Over Pivotal Rajya Sabha Election
The Communist Party of India – Marxist (CPIM) and the Congress are clashing over the outcomes of the recently concluded Rajya Sabha election in Tripura on September 3. Despite having allied for the 2023 Tripura Legislative Assembly elections, both parties are now accusing each other of mishandling the Rajya Sabha contest.
The Congress, which chose to abstain from the Rajya Sabha vote, alleges that the CPIM did not consult them or seek their advice on either the election process or the candidate selection. CPIM had nominated former MLA Sudhan Das for the lone Rajya Sabha seat, but BJP state president Rajib Bhattacharya ultimately won the election.
Congress MLA and former minister Sudip Roy Barman criticized CPIM’s lack of communication, saying, “They make decisions, and we are expected to execute them. This will not happen. We saw what they did in 2023, which ultimately helped the BJP form the government again. The CPIM is responsible for aiding the BJP in forming the government. While we can protest against fascistic rule, that does not mean we will contest elections together.”
Conversely, the CPIM has condemned the Congress leadership at both state and central levels for acting independently, despite previous meetings about the Rajya Sabha election. CPIM State Committee Secretary and MLA Jitendra Chaudhury stated that Congress, as an independent party, had taken its own stand.
“We expected Congress and other secular parties to unite to save our Constitution and fight against the BJP’s anti-constitutional measures and the erosion of federalism. This fight should not be confined to just Lok Sabha or Rajya Sabha elections but should be omnipresent,” Chaudhury remarked. He further added, “Congress’s actions, dictated by differing commands from their high command and state leaders, were unfortunate, and they should provide an explanation.”
The ongoing conflict highlights the strain in the relationship between CPIM and Congress, underlining the complexities and challenges within opposition alliances in the Indian political landscape.
