Tragic Russian Missile Strike in Ukraine: Over 51 Killed, 200+ Injured – Heartbreaking Update | MorungExpress
Kyiv, September 4 (IANS) – A devastating Russian missile strike on a military educational facility in central Ukraine has resulted in at least 51 fatalities and over 200 injuries, marking one of the deadliest single attacks since Moscow’s full-scale invasion began in February 2022. This information was confirmed by Ukraine’s prosecutor general’s office, as per a CNN report.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky shared details of the attack on X (formerly Twitter), revealing that the strike targeted an educational institution and a nearby hospital in Poltava, partially demolishing a building of the telecommunications institute. Zelensky emphasized the urgent need for enhanced air defense systems and missiles in Ukraine to prevent further casualties, stating, “Air defence systems and missiles are needed in Ukraine, not somewhere in a warehouse.”
Preliminary reports indicate that two ballistic missiles were responsible for the destruction. Filip Pronin, head of the Poltava region military administration, confirmed the casualty figures on Telegram, noting that rescue operations are ongoing, and up to 18 more people might be trapped under the rubble. Additionally, at least 10 residential buildings were damaged in the strike.
While Moscow has yet to comment on the incident, prominent Russian military blogger Vladimir Rogov reported that a military school in Poltava was struck. Expressing deep condolences, President Zelensky has initiated a full investigation and extended gratitude to all who aided in the rescue efforts. “All necessary services are involved in the rescue operation. I am grateful to everyone who has been helping and saving lives from the very first moments following the strike,” he said.
President Zelensky also reiterated his plea to Western allies for more air defenses and the lifting of restrictions on Ukraine’s military capabilities to strike inside Russia. He stressed, “Long-range strikes that can protect against Russian terror are needed now, not later. Every day of delay is, unfortunately, the death of people.”
